Aotearoa Taonga - Marine Conservation New Zealand

Aotearoa Taonga - New Zealand Treasure

Welcome to Dive Planets Conservation section. Some may be curious of the name we have chosen for this very important section of our website. Aotearoa is Maori for New Zealand and means Island of the long white cloud. Taonga means Treasure and that is very appropriate so now you can see that our Conservation section is rightfully named New Zealand Treasure.

Our mascot for our Conservation section is Wheke, an Octopus as they are classed as being the most intelligent species in our oceans. The Wheke also has great significance in Maori History and by clicking on this link here you can read the story of Kupe and the Giant Wheke.

Throughout Aotearoa Taonga my aim is to explain and educate people about conservation without getting too technical. Conservation is very important so my main focus is about our marine sector and how we can protect it and all the beautiful creatures that are within her depths.

We encourage children of all ages to send us thier stories and pictures and we will publish them here in our Young Explorers section of Aotearoa Taonga. Please send your photos, drawings and stories to info@diveplanet.co.nz
