NZ Fur Seals - Marine Planet

Discover The NZ Fur Seals

The New Zealand Fur Seals are magnificent creatures that many look upon as being a threat, but like any living things there are times that you can approach and times that you cannot. Generally around October onwards they are very protective especially the big Females whereas around June and July they are more approachable. Taking this a bit further it really depends upon the seals. One should never just take it for granted that you can approach them and touch them as this is not the case. Seals that are used to having humans around are a lot more receiving than ones that live a life of solitude. During my filming with The Best Picture Company and Discovery Channel in South Australia aboard the Fox Research vessel I had the opportunity to see both sides of the New Zealand Fur Seals. Yes that’s right even our seals are over in Australia, but that is another story. In the month ofJuly we were able to approach the seals on one of the Neptune Islands. The juveniles were very accepting and so were the majority of the big females. Just take a look here at these great photos of the New Zealand Fur Seals..

Returning to the Neptune Islands in October was another story, as the Juveniles were still curious but I found them to be more cautious. The seals were now reaching a maturity level where they were leaving mum and heading off the shore in search of their own food. This is when they are most vulnerable to the Great White sharks that we went to Dive with. The big Females were aggressive as they were pregnant, just as any new mum or old hand at it would be.

I even had a big seal chase me for a few metres and I must say they really can cover some distances. Just because they look huge fat and lazy, dont let this fool you as they belly flop covering a fair distance quickly. I am planning on doing a big section about the New Zealand Fur Seals once I have researched them more to be able to accurately educate our youngsters. This is a great opportunity to share with my children the importance and dangers associated with all living creatures.
