Fishing Northland NZ

Fishing in the Far North of New Zealand can be very productive so when I got a call from Luke of the Blackdogcat Company I just had to take the invitation. Heading up to Whangarei was a journey in itself as I overlooked the holiday weekend ending up sitting in traffic for two hours to get to Warkworth from the North Shore of Auckland. Total trip time to Whangarei was a staggering 4 hours instead of a relaxed hour forty five. Once in Whangarei at the Blackdogcat Company I met up with the rest of the guys before taking a leisurely drive to Kaitia in the Far North NZ.

After having an awesome meal a few ales we set off at 4.30am heading up Ninety Mile beach to launch the Blackdogcats' as we were heading for Cape Van Diemen. The surf was quite wild as we watched seven metre boats get a hammering piercing through the surf waves of this unforgiving coastline. Then it was our turn to make way and take on the mighty Wild West coast. I have to say I was a tad apprehensive being in a boat with two other guys, dive and fishing gear along with camera equipment starring at walls of water in a four metre boat. But the Blackdogcat performed exceptionally well as we carved up the waves, getting airborne over each crest. These boats really take one heck of a pounding and I cannot imagine any other craft of this size surviving the brutal impact forces as the Blackdog did. The sheer stresses alone from dropping off the back of these waves would have surely annihilated any glass craft vessel.

Once out beyond the breakers we powered out in comfort through the high seas to Cape Van Diemen. Schools of Trevally, Mao Mao and Kahawai were seen shimmering on the surface. As soon as the lines were dropped we started hooking into some Nice Sized ocean Kahawai with a few decent snapper to follow. This was an awesome day of fishing and a few laughs as we played with the boats in the Surf at Ninety Mile beach. See Video here within.

Day Two Fishing Competition

On day two after a very restful evening we headed up to Tauputaputa (see Map Insert) Cape Reinga. Today was to be a day of little fish action but still a great level of excitement as Johno hooked into a nice sized Kingfish on 10kg line that he battled for forty odd minutes before spitting the hook just below the surface. He was gutted but that is the joy of fishing for you.

Some great fish were taken by other participants in the competition winning some really great prizes like Plasma screen Tv's etc. Image here of Gavin with his 20kg Kingfish that was taken off the Cape. In this next image we can see how this fish was landed as it was actually foul hooked, this was an awesome achievement by Gavin skilfully landing this beauty.

Other photos here are of other fishermen on the weekend that had great catches of some very impressive Red Snapper.

Many Thanks to Luke and Kevin of Blackdogcat Company, along with Greg and family in Kaitia for you're the very generous hospitality, having me come and stay.
