What do Great White sharks eat? No not people! Sharks in general do not like the taste of us. The main diet for the Great White shark consist of Seal and Tuna fish. They are both high in fattty oils and this is by far the preffered staple diet of a Great White Shark. They also eat Whales and eventhough whales are much larger they still fall prey to a big aggressive Great White.
As sharks are scavengers they do a good job cleaning up our seas of other species that have have died due to accidents like whales that have been struck by passing ships. In this photo below from this 3 meter Great White the stomach was full of Whale blubber. This shark most likely came across a carcuss and feasted on it swallowing a section of Whale bone at the same time.
This photo below shows the stomach contents of a 3 meter Great white shark. all the white creamy matter is whale blubber. As this shark is only a juvinielle it most likely came across a whale carcus and started feasting on it working its way up to the spione of the whale. hence the reason for the large piece of whale bone that was found in its gut.

The image below shows the piece of whale bone that we found in the sharks stomach.

Fur seals like the ones pictured below are a favoured source of food for the Great white shark as they are high in fatty acids that are of great value to this shark. This photo was taken at the Neptune islands in south Australia of the New Zealand Fur Seals.

The Great white shark has been found to have all sorts of debris within thier stomachs from bits of plastic to spare tyres from cars and number plates. The reason for this is that as they are scavengers they will on occasions mistakingly consumer some pretty wierd stuff. The Great white like other sharks has the ability to push thier stomachs inside out from thier mouths cleaning out foreign matter. This in itself is quite amazing considering how sharp the teeth are and how no damage occurs to the stomach during this practice. |
