Great White Sharks Liver

The Great White Sharks Liver

The liver in the Great White is the largest organ. This organ not only processes the food into energy it also acts as buoyancy control for the shark. The combination of oils and fats are 6 times lighter than seawater. The shark with the aid of the liver can maintain a body temperature of 59 degrees Fahrenheit above the surrounding water temperature. The liver has two lobes and each lobe in a fully-grown Great White can be as big as the bonnet of a family car.

A healthy liver is indicated by its pinkness. The pinker the liver the healthier the shark is. Looking at the photos below you can see that this shark was healthy as it has a very nice pink coloured liver.

This image shows how the liver lobes wrap over the stomach and uterus of the Great White Shark. This shark was accidently caught in a fishermans net out from Hawkes Bay New Zealand.
