Sharks Under Seige

Worldwide sharks are under seige, attacks against humans have an average of 75 attacks per year with 10 deaths. This is very tragic but considering the millions of people that enter the water each year the amount of deaths is miniscule.

The sharks themselves are the ones that are under constant threat of extinction. The World Conservation Union firmly believes that 65 of the 373 known species of sharks are under threat. Whereas some experts in the field believe this number is far greater.

The sharks that are under the most threat are the Blue, Hammerhead and Silky sharks and Great White shark.

Take Action

Even though these predators of the deep blue fear many, there is no excuse to sit back and watch their demise before your very eyes. Lions, Tigers and Bears to name a few also kill people and we do not stand by allowing the needless killings of these animals.

Sharks have amazing attributes matched by senses that make them a very formidable force. These senses include the ability to detect minute changes in water pressure and being able to detect electromagnetic pulses yet they can still be easily caught with a baited hook.

The rapid diminishing numbers of these sharks are largely contributed to the needless barbaric slaughter of over 173 million sharks per year for their fins. The method here is to catch the shark removing its dorsal, pectoral and tail fin then discarding the main body back into the sea half alive.

Use of Fins

The fins are a so-called delicacy among the Asian community as well as a multimillion-dollar business selling for between $100 and $150 U.S a bowl of soup in Chinese restaurants.

The sharks are the ones that are in the most danger here, as the self-centred Asian community that supports this action are raping them from the sea.

Seeing sharks under seige is just as bad as the Whaling and more has to be done to change attitudes.

Facing Facts

  • Over 170 million sharks slaughtered each year

  • 65 of the 373 known sharks under threat

  • Blue, Hammerhead and Silky sharks most at risk barbarically slaughtered for their fins

  • Shark fin market on the increase

  • Shark fin soup has very little nutritional value.

  • The Asian Community needs to learn some facts and help save our sharks.
