Great White Shark Autopsy |
|
Thousands of people turned out to see the Great White Shark Autopsy commonly known as a Necropsy when dealing with fish. This was a fantastic event between the Auckland Museum and the Department of Conservation. Clinton Duffy is New Zealand's leading shark expert and carried out the task on this Great white as he has done other Great White sharks. The last time Clinton Duffy opened up a Great White shark to our knowledge for when paul featured in the Ultimate shark doco with National Geographic in 2006. When a Necropsy is performed lots of information can be gained. Paul and Julian of Dive Planet proudly bring you photos and video of the days event. Please support the Auckland Museum and pay them a visit where your children can expand their minds taking in the past present and future.

Clinton Duffy of the Department of Conservation starts to cut into this shark to show us all the contents that may be inside her stomach. Will it be a whole seal, loads of fish or foreign material? As we upload all the photos and video over the next few hours all will be shown here so you can come and see, learn about the Great Whites Anatomy.

As Clinton Duffy cuts through the flesh we can see the liver of this shark. The Great Whites have two large liver lobes that overlap. The liver consists of fatty oils that aid in buoyancy. If the shark is healthy the liver will look nice and pink, going by this initial sight it looks as if this shark was in peak condition..

Here we are looking at the jaw of this 3 metre Great White shark. These teeth are double edged and serrated. They are very shark and interlock as they tear flesh away from their intended prey. Great Whites eat seals, fish, stingrays as a main diet along with Whale Blubber.

Paul assists in setting up the shark into position for the public display. Great White sharks seldom attack humans. Learn the truth about the Great White Sharks here on Dive Planet in our Research Section.
