Eco Tourism NZ Eco Diving

Approximately 30 years ago ecotourism began emerging as a hot topic for anyone that cares for our planet. People that are ecologically and socially conscious on minimising the impact their travelling may have. It involves respecting the local culture and indigenous people while enjoying the flora, fauna and marine environment. Ecotourism requires a joint effort to be successful, not just the tourist but the tour/charter operators. There is a lot of lip service given to ecotourism as it is perceived to be trendy and financially rewarding for promoters and many are getting the concept only half right.

Here at Dive Planet we are very conscious of ecotourism and want to promote, by way of education, recycling, energy efficiency and water quality management. Dive Planet supports PROJECT AWARE , which is a non profit organisation covering approximately 175 countries and supported by divers and conservationists worldwide. PROJECT AWARE provides training for divers and educational programs for children and also monitors and collects data on sensitive marine areas, e.g. coral reefs.

Goals of Dive Planet New Zealand

Dive Planet's goal is to become Eco-diveplanet and will launch COASTAL AWARE PROJECTS or C.A.P for short. This will involve coordinating and carrying out practical things we can all do to improve and maintain our marine eco system, underwater cleanups around our coasts and reefs and shark education and myth busting, e.g. exposing shark fining. Involving national, local bodies and the media to lift and gain exposure for this great cause.

Dive Planet regards scuba diving and eco-diving as one, and we are proud to have operators on board that are extremely environmentally conscious.

Operators such as NORTHLAND DIVE , encourage divers through education, to enjoy by observing and photographing their dive, setting their own catch limits that are lower than national regulations.

GOAT ISLAND DIVE is another operator conscious of the impact they may have on specific areas and therefore rotate dive sites, with sustainability and minimising impact in mind.

PK DIVE SCUBA DIVE CHARTERS is a PROJECT AWARE ECO-OPERATOR in Tutukaka and operates around the beautiful Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve. PK Dive encourages photographers, underwater videographers and is recognised worldwide as a top spot for scuba diving and snorkelling.

At Dive Planet we recognise the importance of Ecotourism for our children and future generations. It starts here and now!

Project Jonah New Zealand

PROJECT JONAH is another Dive Planet favourite. This New Zealand organisation is run by passionate and dedicated volunteers that care for marine mammals. There are 3 key aspects to their work.

1. Rescue. Mammal medicourse, essential first aid training for stranded and injured animals, which is put into practise by coordinating and mobilising the volunteers nationwide.

2. Action. Creating awareness through education, campaigns and encouraging public involvement.

3. Protection. Exposing marine mammal suffering and advising on legislation to enforce and protect animals, create pressure and bring about change.

Project Sharkfin New Zealand

Please follow the link here and sign our Petition against Shark Finning and the Trading of Shark Fins on all levels within New Zealand.
