Miners Head is another one of the awesome dive sites at Great Barrier Island as this location really is for the hunters especially. This area is well known for the Packhorse crayfish that nest in this area. Commercial Cray pots are a dead giveaway as they are scattered up the coastline. On a recent dive to this location in April of 2008 we came across a nest of over half a dozen Packhorse crays. The funny thing I found was laying above the nest was a cray pot having only a juvenile red inside of it. See Crayfish Rules Regulations here
Diving Miners Head
This location is easy to find due to the green stains that run down the rock face from the copper deposits. Anyone venturing to this location should be aware of the strong currents that run here making it more of a spot for advanced divers.
Make sure that you handle these crays with care as the size limit is 216mm from the first segment on the tail. I highly recommend the use of crayfish noose's as this will decrease the chances of causing damage to these huge crayfish.
When I was out here with the team of Goat Island Dive the crayfish I got was around 6mm to small so he was put back to survive another season hopefully to grow a bit more. This may seem like a small amount but we all have to stick to the regulations in order of maintaining a healthy population. Please remember to never take all the crays you come across out of any one particular nest as this will create a situation where that they will not return.
