The Labrid Channel got its name from the sighting of the many wrasses (labrids) that have been seen here. Over the years the Labrid channel has changed significantly and more information about this topic can be found at the sea friend's website.
Now there is a sandy river running all the way from Ngaio Bay to the other end of South Harbour where boulders stack up from the sand up the slope to the sheer cliffs around this area. The shallow sand acts as a very productive habitat attracting an assortment of fish. You can see many fish in the archways, but these are like hotels, as most of these fish are sleeping. The Labrid Channel itself is like a busy super highway for the active species that inhabit this area.
Types of fish that you may encounter within this area range from wrasses, goatfish, koheru that can be found in the mid water system and jellyfish. The numbers of fish in this area has somewhat depleted over the years but this is still a great place to dive for the experienced.
Important Note: There can be a swift current running through the Labrid Channel. This current stream that is entirely unpredictable may well be caused by swirling eddies, branching off from the East Auckland currents.
