We called this site the lost world after the dinosaur movie, Lost World, because it looks so prehistoric. From July to December New Zealand fur seals often stop here and you may hear their eerie calls, or see them fly past underwater. Spectacular!
The lost world is a grotto formed inside the island and swimming in you see the light gradually get dimmer until you don't quite need a torch. There's a swim through here called the birth canal, and a sandy path to lead you in to the grotto.
After a swim around in the lost world enjoying the ambience, I normally come back out and head round the corner to a place called Jan's tunnel, named after Jan Doak, wife of the famous NZ diver/photographer/author Wade.
Jan's tunnel always has fantastic visibility, and often we see juvenile squid zooming around inside. Stunning blood red warratah anemones cover the top 2 metres of the walls. On the swim back to the boat you'll see pink mao mao and golden snapper schooling off the point. Dive the Lost World that is a beautiful dive site that has a lot to offer.
