Kaikoura is a really great place to gather food. You don't get any of the warmer species of fish down here but it's very known for its Paua, Cray's or Kina if that's your thing. Its one of those locations that is well guarded by Mother Nature as it does not take much for the viability to be terrible. You really need to be watching 5 days out and NW is really good for this coastline. IF there has been a Southerly blow through then it's likely to be murky. Sometimes the North side of Kaikoura is not as clear as the south but it's really pot luck if you have not been watching the conditions.
There are large amounts of butterfish and Moki out this way and whilst I have noted one spot it's really a great place to explore and find heaps of new ones yourself. Most of the bottom is less tan 8mtrs and getting a good feed is very simple.
The large Paua are under the rocks or ledges. Or of course you can swim out deeper and find them out there. Most spots that you can almost drive into the water are easy targets and but there will be less around.
There are just massive kelp beds, ranging from small stringy kelp to the massive bull kelp. Around this coast is a large number of seal's of which requires some awareness as they can really startle you as they normally blast past.
Most of the spearfishing you do here you can do from the surface but if you are after the larger fish then sitting on the tomorrow or in the weed really is the way to go
