Pippin Island Spearo Dive Site Blenheim - Dive Planet

Pippin Island Dive Site

There are many reefs around on your way around Pippin Island to Specific Point, and all have good baitfish and Terakihi in the right spots. You head around to the image opposite. If you have a dingy there is a small beach you can drag your boat up on or just anchor you boat close to the reef. There has been a number of Kingfish taken around the Pippin Island area.

There are often schools of bait fish around this reef and often the current is running through here which is great for Kingfish. We often head out for an easy feed of Terakihi. They are normally around the 12-15 metres deep. Terrain is rocky and gravely with the odd sandy bits. I find burley is always very effective. Normally there is heaps of Kina around everywhere, small onion sack with smashed up Kina will work a treat. That will also bring around the blue cod. If you don't have any, diving down and waiting is always good.

We have always found them easy to get there as they do come in close. So a 100 or 120 sized gun with a 20mtr float line is adequate but once again, thereare Kingfish around in the warmer months. In the shallows around the island is often large rocks with sharp drop offs. It a very stunning environment and you can find the odd butter fish or Moki around the weed areas. Around the reef is always interesting. Right at the reef it's around 1-2 metres but normally drops straight down to around the 10mtrs  . It's worth a look around the tip and up both sides specially if you are after kingfish. The Terakihi are off about 15mtrs to the left of the tip of the reef and in most places you dive you will find them from there but some spots have more than others.

How to Get Here - Maheipuku Point

Specific Location: heading towards Blenheim turn left just before Hira to Cable Bay. Takes about 15min from turn off. Boat Ramp is right at end of the Road before you get into Pippin Island (private property).

Do note that there is a reef that is very shallow at low tide. You will not be able to get your boat over it. Head long beach about 15-20mtrs out and go along for 100mtrs or so, then you can head out.
