Choppy Seas

Ground swells can be fun

Ground swells hitting shore can be a bit scary

Sometimes they can take you by surprise and be Dangerous

Our Seas Information

Within the forecasts above the Face Height is indicated as being Dark Blue on the Graphs. This equals to the largest wave that you should expect at the Shoreline. The average wave face is smaller than the Peak Face height of any wave.

Here are some basic facts about our seas that you may find interesting.

About Height of Chop

Imagine that there was a southwest ground swell that was caused by a deep southern low pressure system that sends a two meter swell to our west coast. As well as this we have a 40 knot easterly direction wind blowing offshore at the same time.

Now imagine that you are in a vessel one mile from shore, here you will find yourself contending with a large Ground swell and a large wind chop. This height equates to the height of the wind swell. The height of this chop can increase to many meters when the shoreline waves are flat. This scenario is very relevant to fishermen of New Zealand.

About Ocean Swell

Ocean Swell is the height of the deep ocean swell offshore

PeriodAffects Size

Period: This is everything when you determine the size and power of surf along a shoreline. Long period swells are measured by time between each wave. The longer the period the higher the wave will be with more power. Whereas a short period equates to having more waves closer together, say 3 to 4 second intervals. Surfers and kayakers are very aware of these differences. See images opposite.

Facts About Ground Swell

Groundswell is what all surfers live for, and what guys need to keep a watch out for. Storms thousands of miles from the coastline can create powerful swells which travel for days before reaching the shoreline. These swells can be generated so far away they are outside the local weather pattern. Offshore winds and blue skies can be present when a large groundswell arrives from miles away.
